Cole High School Features
Another Talented Big Man
It was a little over 30 years ago – in the spring of
1989 – that San Antonio’s Cole High School won its
only state title in boys’ basketball.
That team went 36-0 and was led by a tall teenager,
Shaquille O’Neal, the son of a retired Army man.
Three decades later, at that same Cole High School
located on Fort Sam Houston, the Cougars are led by
another tall teenager who is also the son of a retired
He is 6-foot-11, 220-pound sophomore Vince
Iwuchukwu, who led the Cougars to the Class 3A
state semifi nals last season as a freshman. In that
game, a 43-33 loss to Dallas Madison, Iwuchukwu
scored 10 points, blocked eight shots and grabbed
In one particularly impressive defensive
possession, he blocked four shots.
Among sophomores, Iwuchukwu is ranked No. 1 in
Texas and No. 21 in the nation, according to ESPN.
“Vincent has a great chance to be in the NBA one
day,” Cole coach Noe Cantu said. “He works hard.
He wants to be coached, and he wants to learn. He
doesn’t think he has it all fi gured out. He knows he
has room to improve, and he doesn’t take his height
